Through this fruitful cooperation between Syngenta and Al-Jabaly Agricultural Group, the latest technologies for the early detection of the red palm weevil were announced in an important and beneficial workshop for farmers.

The workshop was organized by Al-Jabaly Agricultural Group through Al-Jabaly Agricultural Company and Syngenta International on Monday, April 29, 2024, with gracious hospitality from the Directorate of Agriculture of the Jordan Valley. Attendees included representatives from the Directorate of Plant Protection and Health, the Director of the Directorate of Agriculture of the Jordan Valley, members of the Palm Section in the Directorate of Agriculture of the Jordan Valley/Deir Alla, and relevant personnel from the Northern Ghor Directorate and Southern Shouneh Directorate in Balqa Governorate. The workshop was also attended by Dr. Ibrahim Al-Jabouri, representing the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization).

The workshop featured a technical lecture on early detection techniques for the red palm weevil, a major pest, using artificial intelligence and IoT technologies. Mr. Shuaib Othman from Smart Pest System - SPOTTA, the company that developed this technology, and Engineer Mohammed Al-Kawamleh from Syngenta gave a detailed explanation of the advanced technologies for early detection of agricultural pests. They also demonstrated the mechanism of the smart electronic traps, highlighting their key features and the experiments the company conducted across various Arab countries, including the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Afterward, the participants visited the trial site to examine the system in action on the farm and conduct an initial evaluation of the results of monitoring and trapping the red palm weevil.

At the conclusion of the workshop, Syngenta invited all participants to a lunch at Elite Restaurant by the Dead Sea, coinciding with the completion of the first phase of the national campaign to combat the red palm weevil. A vote of thanks was extended to the Directorate of Plant Protection and Health, all injection teams, and the campaign’s teams.
